Why You Aren’t Successful

Success, defined in any way that you may want to define it, is ultimately one of the most important goals in our lives. We measure ourselves based on our own expectations and potential. I describe success as being everything that you were intended to be. Below are some reasons why many people have not achieved that status.

  1. You prepare more for quitting than for success.

T.G.I.F (Thank God It’s Friday) has become a moniker used for decades but I question people’s reasoning behind it. Yes, Friday is an amazing day and we should thank God for it but people love Fridays because it means break time. It represents the end of the working week and the start to the weekend where one can relax. The problem is most successful people do not view Fridays in that manner. If everyone is working 40-50 hours a week, what will make you more successful than them? If you only get 168 hours in a week, your success will be reflective of what you do in those hours. Time is the most precious luxury we have, as it is the only thing that we can never get back. Use your time more wisely than others and you will achieve more success than others.

  1. You can’t escape the “old you”.

In order to be successful, we must understand that the person that we are must change to make it to the next level. Many of us are scared of change and adversity is the process in which we change. We do not make major change when everything is going well hence the popular saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In weight lifting, we become stronger when our muscles get broken down. Motivational speaker Eric Thomas says that “if you want to shine like a diamond, you must get cut like a diamond.” To change into that new version of yourself that is ready for success, you have to leave behind the bad habits. You have to push yourself every chance that you get, waking up when you don’t want to wake up, staying up when you want to sleep, doing one more rep when your body can’t take it, studying when your eyes can’t focus on the page anymore etc. In addition to this escaping of the old you, you must enter or create a circle of people who are on the same page as you; who have the same ambitions. He who stands by the fire is bound to get hot and being surrounded by successful people, will give you a taste of how to change into the best version of yourself.

  1. You don’t have the habits of a successful person.

Habits are defined as things that we become regularly accustomed to doing that are hard to give up. If you fall into this category chances are you do not wake up on time, you do not have a routine, you “wing it”, you do not have a plan, you spend more time doing recreational activity than working towards your goal, you fail to self-motivate yourself, and many more things. If you do not have the proper habits, you are constantly digging a hole for yourself that will be harder to get out of.

  1. You don’t really believe that you could be successful.

Many people lack the patience to continuously keep pushing toward a goal even when they see no progress. It is the reason why so many people start the New Year going to a gym saying that this year will be better and a few weeks in their membership collects dust. We live in a society where we want everything faster. We are becoming less and less patient and many underestimate the amount of time it takes to be successful. If you can only imagine receiving wealth in the short term, you need to reevaluate your goals. In addition to that, we have people that give up too easily. Everyone experiences failure but not everyone experiences success and to achieve this, you must be willing to persevere after all the hard work you’ve done seems like a waste.

  1. You underestimate what it takes to be successful.

In this age, because we see so many people receive “fame” or rather attention so quickly, we may sometimes forget that success takes a long time. That person we see that just started making music two months ago and already has one of the biggest songs in the country, probably will not be around in the next year doing the same thing. In fact most musicians who are one-hit wonders become so because they do not understand what it takes to stay around because they blew up so quickly.

Take these reasons into account the next time you question your success level. To achieve our goals, we must understand them. Can you think of any other reasons why you might not be successful?
